Indecent exposure, assault, contempt, a violation of the Minor Offenses Act and public nuisance drunkenness result in a punishment of Misdemeanor Imprisonment without Work. This sentence carries a maximum punishment of imprisonment for less than 30 days but the minimum punishment for this sentence is just one day.
Recently smaller crimes are increasingly handled by the Summary Courts and the sentence of Misdemeanor Imprisonment without Work is used with less frequency. In 2004, the year with the highest number of Misdemeanor Imprisonment without Work convictions in the recent past, one much discussed case involved the conviction of a man for rudeness to a lady. He received the maximum sentence of 29 days. He appealed, but the higher court dismissed his plea and confirmed the sentence.
