Family courts in Japan have jurisdiction to hear cases arising from disputes within a family. These might include cases relating to divorce, support payments or adoption. Some cases, such as divorce, have a mandatory mediation requirement before the case can be heard by the court. Family courts also have jurisdiction over cases involving juvenile delinquency and crimes committed by minors under 14. Cases are heard either by a single judge or a three judge panel. Family courts are sometimes, but not always, located in a different court house from the criminal and civil courts.
