Certain procedures in Japan, such as applying for citizenship or some visas, require showing proof of full tax payment in Japan. This proof often is best presented in the form of a certificate of tax payment issued by the Japanese national government and local city/prefecture governments.
A certificate of tax payment can be obtained at the local ward office and local tax office. The certificate is issued by the Japanese government and will unequivocally establish proof of tax payment for the applicant It should be noted that the national tax certificate is different from the city/prefecture tax certificate. Therefore, two certificates will often be necessary to show proof of full tax payment.
